Stock theft in South Africa: how good records protect your herd

A plain-English guide to using your brand, ear tags and records to prevent theft and prove what's yours.

Stock theft is one of the biggest causes of unexplained livestock loss in South Africa. Animals disappear from far camps, get moved at night, and turn up at sales or abattoirs before you even know they're gone. You can't fence out every risk — but the farmers who lose the least, and recover the most, almost always have one thing in common: good records and clear identification.

Why records are your best defence

When an animal goes missing, two questions decide what happens next: can you prove it's yours, and can you show it's actually missing? Without records, both are hard. With them, you can give the police a clear description, identification numbers and proof of ownership on the spot — and the sooner you can do that, the better the chance of recovery and of stopping the animal being sold on.

Your brand and ear tags are your legal identity

In South Africa, your registered brand or tattoo mark (under the Animal Identification Act) is the legal way to show an animal belongs to you. Combined with ear tags — a visual tag you read by eye and, increasingly, an electronic (RFID) tag — they make each animal identifiable and traceable back to your farm.

• A consistent, correctly applied brand is what police and the Stock Theft Unit rely on to link a recovered animal to you.
• Ear tags and EID numbers let you (and a buyer, vet or abattoir) match a specific animal to your records.
• A record that ties the brand, tags and the animal's history together is far stronger than any one of them alone.

Spotting theft early — count, don't guess

The single biggest factor in recovery is time: the faster you notice animals are gone and report it, the better. That's where a regular head count (muster) matters. If you only realise stock is missing weeks later, the trail is cold. If you count often and know your numbers, you can report within hours — with exactly which animals are gone and their identification.

What to have ready if stock goes missing

• An up-to-date animal register — each animal with its tags, brand, breed, colour and a recent location.
• A recent count so you can say precisely how many, and which, are missing.
• Proof of ownership and history — a fact sheet per animal showing its record.
• Your movement and sale records (including any §6/§8 removal certificates), so police can tell a genuine sale from a theft.

Prevention that actually helps

• Brand and tag every animal, consistently — unidentified stock is the easiest to move and the hardest to recover.
• Know your numbers — count regularly so a loss shows up in days, not months.
• Record movements between camps so an empty camp is noticed, not assumed.
• Keep records backed up — a notebook in the bakkie can be lost or burned; theft cases can take months.
